Media misinformation and disinformation, weakens public perception

TODAY is the last day of the Global Media and Information Literary (GMIL) Week commemoration and held during the end week of the month of October 24-31. Considered the new digital frontiers of information, the GMIL is promoting and moving global stakeholders for raising concern and awareness about the dissemination of the correct media information and literacy program for every country participant.

The danger in the explosion of misinformation and disinformation around media will weaken public perception and deliberation about a particular issue at hand most especially in our country’s political squabbles. It will undermine the confidence of the readers in dissecting the correct information being communicated to them by the media practitioners. Credibility in informing the public on the right media information will be questioned if the facts being disseminated is questionable and not founded or supported by proper documentation as evidence of facts.

THE China-ASEAN Year of Media Exchange, and the second ASEAN Media Roundtable was held in Beijing on Oct 31in 2019 by CCTV Video News Agency and People’s Television Network from the Philippines. Over 100 people working in media from 30 countries, including 19 from ASEAN countries, took part in the roundtable to discuss the role of media in promoting China-ASEAN community of shared future and how to enhance the international influence of media. Dr. Julio O. Castillo, former chairman of the board of directors and Network General Manager of People’s Television Network in the Philippines, said the roundtable will strengthen the cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, and stressed the importance of new media in the development of ASEAN’s media.

Kudos to the Efforts of the GMIL and other affiliates like the Nobel Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences bringing in the Nobel Prize Summit Truth, Trust and Hope and participated by Noble Prize laureates, researchers, lawmakers and professionals in exploring and gathering different aspects of thoughts to combat misinformation and build trust in media information and literacy to be applied to the institutions they serve.

These experts across a range of fields provide insights on the effects and impact of the misinformation and disinformation and suggest recommendations on how to curb and prevent them. The current Global Media and Information Literacy week conference has ‘The new digital frontiers of information: Media and Information literacy for public -interest information” as a theme. This subject is timely and relevant in global concern about fake news and unverifiable facts being communicated in the media and other platforms.

The conference is hosted by UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom and will be held today October 30-31, 2024 in Amman, Jordan. Among other topics to be discussed are the transformative impact of emerging technologies like AI and new generation of digital content creators in their media production and operations. The convergence will give highlights to the opportunities and risks in providing the dissemination of public interest information, lay-out probable solution in the need to empower users and tailor fit skills that is identified after assessment and engagement to benefit public-information provided by the media practitioner in any platforms.

It is time for our government to strengthen our education system in monitoring the progress on the subject being taught in senior high school particularly the introduction to basic understanding of media and information as channels of communication and instrument for the country’s development.

This development will enhance and strengthen our students on their creative thinking process and competency in critical thinking proficiency. The GMIL is celebrated in our LGUs and schools, but it lacks the transformative activities that will sustain the learning process in actualizing its goals and objectives. I suggest that the practice of MIL should not be limited to an annual event but integrate in the lesson plan or syllabus to enhance and sustain the practice of questioning, verifying, identifying the correct information handed.
