CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City — The Municipality of Calayan under the leadership of Mayor Joseph M. Llopis, turned over a 25-hectare of land to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as a show of support towards bolstering national security and fostering sustainable development in the region.
Calayan Island is renowned for its strategic location and rich natural resources making it a preferred venue for military exercises for the longest time. Recognizing the island’s significance, the LGU of Calayan took the initiative to contribute a substantial portion of land to the AFP as a gesture of their profound commitment to supporting the AFP’s mission of safeguarding the nation.
Lt. Gen. Fernyl G. Buca, PAF, Commander of Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) AFP, who represented the Chief of Staff, AFP, Gen. Andres C. Centino, PA in the said event, highlighted that the presence of the AFP in Calayan Island will not only enhance maritime security but also contribute to sustainable development and bolster the local economy.
Moreover, the military’s engagement in the area will support environmental protection efforts and maritime governance.
It can be recalled that earlier this year, the Philippine Navy received a donation of 5 hectares in this area which will substantially augment the flexibility and effectiveness of archipelagic coastal defense in the northern fringes of the country.
Additionally, the AFP’s forward presence will ensure prompt government response during natural disasters and humanitarian missions, guaranteeing the welfare of the people.
Gen. Buca expressed his utmost gratitude to Mayor Llopis and the people of Calayan for their unwavering support and patriotism, which made this historic donation possible.
He said that “this remarkable collaboration between the LGU and the AFP exemplifies the shared commitment to national security, sustainable development, and the progress of Calayan Municipality.”
The highlight of the event was the Signing of the Deed of Donation by the key members of Calayan LGU and AFP.
This is another significant milestone in NOLCOM’s pursuit to engage and collaborate with LGUs and other stakeholders in securing the territory and developing peace in the region. (UnliNews Online)
