Water elevation of Angat, Ipo and Bustos dam continues to rise; Ipo, Bustos dams release water

CITY OF MALOLOS — The water elevations of Angat, Ipo and Bustos dams here in Bulacan continue to rise due to the heavy downpours brought by the southwesterly winds strengthened by Typhoon Carina.

Based on data from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Bulacan this Wednesday afternoon (July 24), the height of water in Angat Dam was recorded at 179.40 meters, Ipo Dam 102.18 meters and Bustos Dam at 17.41 meters.

The water elevation of Angat Dam is 60 centimeters below its minimum operating level of 180 meters and 32.60 meters below its normal high water level of 212 meters.

The water level of the Ipo Dam has reached 102.18 meters or has exceeded its spilling level of 101 meters, meanwhile the Bustos Dam has reached 17.41 meters or has also exceeded its spilling level of 17.35 meters.

Since the waters in Ipo and Bustos Dam have exceeded the spilling level, they are currently discharging water into its downstream river system.

Josephine Salazar, the Regional Director of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Region 3 said thru telephone interview that starting at Wednesday afternoon, the Bustos Dam has released 208 cubic meters per second of water from 39 cms earlier at 6:00 in the morning while the Ipo Dam releasing 344.49 cms this afternoon.

Because of this, Salazar further explained that the Bustos Dam can release up to 550 cms of water.

According to Salazar around 1:30 Wednesday Sluice Gates 1 and Sluice Gate 2 of Bustos were closed to give way to the deflation of Rubber Gate No. 3 of which will increase. Its discharge at 595 cms with 70 cms of water from Sluice Gate No. 3 of which are not closed. (UnliNews Online)
